The food service sector is very lucrative, especially for catering firms working at pace to service businesses and showpiece events in locations right across the country.

Food is a precious commodity, especially when organisations are paying a premium for it to be delivered and served at events to impress their customers, or shower love on their employees to celebrate a job well done.

One recent project in our portfolio saw us revisit a corrugated packaging solution we had previously designed for a different customer, adapting it to suit a new purpose in the food service industry. As always, our designers rose to the challenge, tackling a very precise client brief head on.

Brief

After being recommended by an existing customer, we were approached by a buffet catering business with a need for a bespoke printed corrugated tray that was suitable for food service applications.

During our initial discussions, the customer referred to a corrugated bread tray we had already designed and manufactured for another client. They identified it as the perfect starting point, with a structure that could be adapted to suit their specific needs.

While the existing tray design provided a solid foundation, it was clear that it would need to be modified in order to be fit for purpose, including:

  • Adapting the tray to the customer’s product dimensions and usage requirements
  • Ensuring the tray functioned effectively in a food service environment
  • Maintaining its strength to protect the contents, while also prioritising usability, brand impact and presentation

Solution

We began by adjusting the size and proportions of the original bread tray to meet the customer’s specifications. Throughout the design process, multiple prototype iterations were produced, with each version thoroughly tested and refined to ensure it stood up to real world conditions.

Following a number of careful design adjustments, we successfully achieved the required packaging dimensions, while retaining the required levels of strength and rigidity needed to preserve food in transit.

With a structure in place, we focused on the external design of the tray. This meant incorporating the brand’s logo, as well as key information and go-to-market messaging while at all times, optimising the layout to retain clarity and strong brand presentation.

The finished packaging successfully delivered on the customer’s original brief, providing a bespoke, printed, corrugated tray that met each of the customer’s requirements. The design successfully combined practical functionality with impactful branding, offering a solution that is suitable for handling and presenting produce in fast paced food service environments

If you’re a food service business and you are struggling to source the perfect corrugated packaging solution for your next project or event, then get in touch with us to discuss your brief in more detail.
